Something Witchery this way comes....

Driving through the Scottish snowfields was like a sleigh ride through Narnia and the cool blues soothed my ravaged eyes...noone ever tells you how bereft you feel the day after you get married, remembering the happiest day of your life and knowing that this monumental thing you've been planning and dreaming of is over. I think I almost cried myself blind.

We found The Witchery many many years ago through a review we read and have, ever since, been determined to visit there one day, and what better time, than for our minimoon.

We booked The Old Rectory suite and we were enchanted (thankyou Liz!) from first sight. The deep velvet and brocade, all dimly lit and glowing in red and gold was the perfect retreat and like crawling back into the womb, only with champagne.

This deliciously deep and welcoming daybed was our first sight and we couldn't wait to try it...within the hour we were snuggled amongst the enormous cushions like dormice, fast asleep.

This gothic fairytale offered us everything we needed to revive and luxuriate and we could not have chosen a more perfectly 'us' place to spend some special time.

We also had the deepest slipper bath I have ever seen, it came up to my shoulders and despite being laughably difficult to get out of, there was room for two and we had champagne nestled in amongst the bubbles together. Does hedonism get any more delightful?

The incredible objects all over the room gave it so much history and character and just added to the magical, fairytale feel of the room, like you were spending time under a spell.

And then it was morning, and our spell was breaking, but before we moved on we had a beautiful breakfast brought to us in our room - a wicker basket full of delicious treats, cold meats and cheeses, fruit platters, pastries, cereal and porridge, with strong coffee, creamy milk and a bottle of apple juice. Oh and a paper, read by Jon.

Paid up and checked out we go back down the ginnel and out onto the Royal mile...

Past the beautiful decorations hanging along the outside of the below restaurant

We then bumped into lovely Roxy who checked us in and looked after us during our stay. He personally describes himself as a cross between Andy Warhol and Lily Savage, I just thought he was kindness personified, and I love that he called me 'Hen' :)

Goodbye Witchery! - we'll come back again soon! - I *promise*
